THE VERSE EVERYONE QUOTES—AND ALMOST EVERYONE MISREADS
Open Genesis 1 and one phrase keeps coming back like a drumbeat. Ten times in a single chapter, the text tells us God made living things “after their kind.”
Most people think they know what that means. Ask around, and you’ll hear something like this: God made each species separately, and species can never change. A dog is a dog. A cat is a cat. End of story.
That reading feels safe. It sounds loyal to the Bible. But it has one serious problem. It isn’t what the text says. And people who defend it end up defending a claim the Bible never made.
This post makes a simple case. Genesis 1 does draw real boundaries in the living world. Those boundaries are true, and they matter enormously. But they’re not the boundaries most people imagine. Once we see what Genesis actually claims, the position becomes far stronger—and far harder to knock down.
What the Hebrew actually says
The Hebrew word behind “kind” is min. It appears roughly 31 times in the Hebrew Bible: 10 times in Genesis 1, twice in the flood account, and the rest in the food laws of Leviticus 11 and Deuteronomy 14.
Three small points of grammar do most of the heavy lifting, and each one changes the picture.
1. The little word “after” means “one by one”
In Hebrew the phrase is lemin plus an ending—the preposition le joined to the noun. Here that preposition is what grammarians call distributive. It means “kind by kind,” or “in their several kinds.”
In plain English: it’s describing how God worked, not issuing a rule about what may happen afterwards. God didn’t make one giant blob of life. He made distinct groups, one group after another, each one its own thing.
2. In most verses, the phrase describes God—not reproduction
Read Genesis 1:25 carefully: “And God made the beasts of the earth according to their kinds and the livestock according to their kinds, and everything that creeps on the ground according to its kind.”
Notice the subject of the sentence. God made. The phrase “according to their kinds” modifies God’s act of making. The same is true in Genesis 1:21 and 24.
Only in verses 11 and 12, about plants, is the phrase tied to reproduction—and even there it’s joined to the words “seed in itself.” Plants grow true to type. Wheat seed gives wheat. That’s a real claim, and it’s perfectly true. But it’s a claim about faithful reproduction, not about frozen forms.
3. “Kind” is an everyday word, not a scientific term
This is the point most arguments miss. Min is ordinary Hebrew. It’s a folk word, the kind of word a farmer or shepherd would use, not a technical classification.
Leviticus 11 proves it. There, birds and insects are sorted “after their kind” by how they look and behave—the raven after its kind, the falcon after its kind, the locust after its kind. Moses is grouping creatures the way any observant person would group them: by obvious family resemblance. He’s working at roughly the level we’d today call a family or a genus, not a species.
The word min is never applied to human beings. Not once.
What Genesis positively claims
So if Genesis isn’t teaching frozen species, what is it teaching? Quite a lot, as it happens—and every part of it is worth defending.
- Life began as many, not one. God created a number of separate founding groups. This is the load-bearing claim of the whole chapter, and it’s a direct denial of universal common ancestry.
- Creation is ordered and divided. The key verb running through Genesis 1 is badal, “to separate.” God separates light from darkness, waters from waters, day from night. The word min carries that same logic of ordered division into the living world. The world is a set of categories.
- Offspring resemble parents. Seed-bearing plants produce after their kind. Living things reproduce faithfully. This is simply true, and modern genetics has only deepened our sense of how carefully it is arranged.
- Kinds survived the flood. Genesis 6:20 and 7:14 say the animals came to Noah by kind, not by species.
- Human beings are in a category of their own. More on this later, because it’s the most striking thing in the chapter.
There’s even an echo of this in the New Testament. Writing about the resurrection body, the apostle Paul argues in 1 Corinthians 15:39: “For not all flesh is the same, but there is one kind for humans, another for animals, another for birds, and another for fish.” Paul reasons from created distinctions to the glory of the risen body. The boundaries of Genesis still stand in apostolic theology.
What Genesis does not claim
Now the other side of the ledger. This list matters, because most of the attacks on Genesis are aimed at things Genesis never said.

Being clear about this isn’t a retreat. It’s the difference between defending the Bible and defending a tradition about the Bible.
Why “fixity of species” is Aristotle, not Moses
Where did the frozen-species idea come from? Not from Hebrew. It came from Greek philosophy.
Greek thinker Aristotle taught each type of creature has a fixed essence—an unchanging inner nature that makes it what it is. Plato said something similar with his eternal “forms.” Christian thinkers in later centuries absorbed this framework and read it back into Genesis. By the 17th and 18th centuries, “the fixity of species” was simply assumed to be the biblical position.
It wasn’t. It was Athens, wearing Jerusalem’s clothes.
Here’s the irony. Carl Linnaeus, the Swedish naturalist who gave us the classification system we still use, started out believing in fixed species and later changed his mind. After studying an unusual mutant form of toadflax, he figured new species could arise, probably through hybridisation, from a smaller number of originally created types. The father of modern taxonomy didn’t end his life fixated on fixity.
WHY THIS MATTERS FOR APOLOGETICS
If we defend fixity of species, we’re tying the Bible to a claim that observation has clearly overturned. Speciation has been watched happening. When our position falls, people conclude Genesis fell with it.
If we defend what Genesis actually says, none of that evidence touches us. Speciation isn’t our enemy. Our prediction is.
The positive boundary model, stated plainly
Here’s the model this post is arguing for, in one sentence:
God created a limited number of separate founding populations, and He built into each one a large capacity to vary, adapt and diversify.
Look at what changes when we put things this way.
- Boundaries aren’t fences God patrols. They’re the lasting mark of separate beginnings. Two kinds stay distinct not because something stops them merging, but because they never shared an ancestor in the first place.
- The limit is information, not law. Each created genome carries a rich but finite store of possibilities. Shuffling, sorting and losing that store can produce enormous variety. It cannot produce what was never there.
- Diversification is expected, not excused. A single pair leaving the ark had to fill continents. Rapid change within kinds isn’t an awkward admission. It’s a requirement of the model.
- The claim is about what exists, not how to spot it. Genesis tells us distinct kinds are real. It doesn’t hand us a laboratory method for drawing the lines. That’s honest work yet to be done.
That last point deserves emphasis. Critics often treat it as though it were an admission of defeat. It’s nothing of the sort. Mainstream biology has been arguing about how to define a species for over a century and hasn’t finished either.
Baraminology: the search for the boundaries
The study of created kinds has a name. In 1941, biologist Frank Lewis Marsh coined the word baramin, joining two Hebrew words: bara (create) and min (kind). The field is called baraminology.
Later researchers, especially Kurt Wise and Todd Charles Wood, gave it a working vocabulary.

How researchers look for the lines
- Hybridisation. If two creatures can produce offspring together, they almost certainly belong to the same kind. Wayne Frair developed this line of work, and German biologist Siegfried Scherer built a similar framework he calls basic type biology. One caution must be stated openly: this test only works in one direction. Successful breeding proves shared kind; failure to breed proves nothing, because the ability can be lost over time.
- Statistical methods. Researchers measure many physical characteristics at once and look for gaps—regions where no creature exists between one cluster and another. Techniques include baraminic distance correlation and pattern analysis.
- The cognitum. Todd Wood’s term for the group that ordinary human observers naturally recognise as belonging together. It sounds unscientific, but it turns out to be a surprisingly consistent signal.
Where do the boundaries usually land? In practice, most often at the level biologists call the family, occasionally the order. Research from creation biologists including Jean Lightner and Nathaniel Jeanson puts the ark’s cargo at roughly 1,400 kinds, and fewer than 7,000 individual animals.

Notice how much variety sits inside each row. A chihuahua and a grey wolf are the same kind. So are a lion and a tiger. If someone tells you the biblical view can’t handle biological change, show them that table.
The engine: how so much variety appeared so fast
A fair question follows. If only about 1,400 kinds came off the ark, how did we get the living world we see today, and how did it happen quickly? The model has a real answer, and it isn’t hand-waving.
- Built-in variety being unpacked. The original created pair didn’t carry one version of each gene. It carried several. Ordinary reproduction shuffles those versions into new combinations. Huge visible change can come from simply dealing out a deck that was rich to begin with. That’s design being expressed, not accident.
- Natural selection doing its real job. Selection removes what doesn’t suit the environment. It sorts and preserves; it does not invent. Interestingly, the English naturalist Edward Blyth described a version of selection before Charles Darwin published, and he understood it as a force that keeps creatures true to type rather than one that builds new types.
- Small founding populations. When a handful of individuals colonise a new area, their particular mix of genes becomes the whole population’s inheritance very quickly. This is exactly the situation after a global flood, and it makes rapid divergence not just possible but likely.
- Built-in flexibility. Many organisms can change shape, size, behaviour or body chemistry in response to their surroundings, with no change to their genes at all. Switches already present get flipped.
- Mobile genetic elements. Stretches of DNA that can move within the genome were once dismissed as junk. They increasingly look like part of the designed toolkit for adaptation.
- Hybridisation. Crossing between closely related populations generates new combinations rapidly.
And there’s a limit built into the picture. Geneticist John C Sanford argues harmful mutations accumulate faster than selection can clear them, so the long-term trend for a genome is downhill from an original well-designed state. On this view, the story of life isn’t a climb but a gradual running-down.
THE POINT EVERYONE TALKS PAST
Speciation is not the argument. Nobody serious is denying that populations split, that finches change beaks, or that new species form.
The real question is whether the same processes can build genuinely new equipment—new body plans, new organs, new information-rich machinery. That’s where Douglas Axe, working on how rare functional proteins are, and Michael Behe, arguing that most observed adaptation works by breaking or blunting existing genes, say the mechanism runs down.
Genesis against the monsters: the world Moses was writing into
Genesis 1 wasn’t written in a vacuum. Its first readers lived surrounded by other stories about how the world began.
Those stories are full of blurred creatures. In the Babylonian epic Enuma Elish, sea-goddess Tiamat spawns an army of hybrid monsters—scorpion-men, fish-men, creatures stitched together from parts that do not belong together. Egyptian and Canaanite material tells similar tales. In that world, the boundaries between categories are unstable by nature. Chaos is always leaking through.
Genesis answers with something startlingly calm. God speaks, and the result is a world of stable, nameable, well-ordered categories. Light divided from darkness. Sea divided from land. Creatures made kind by kind. There are no monsters in Genesis 1.
The same logic surfaces later in the law. Israel is told not to sow a field with two kinds of seed, not to breed two kinds of cattle together, not to wear cloth of mixed fibres (Leviticus 19:19; Deuteronomy 22:9–11). These rules puzzle modern readers, but their message is consistent: the created order has real joints, and Israel is to live as a people who respect them.
This is why boundaries in Genesis aren’t restrictions. They’re the reason the world can be understood at all. A world without categories is a world we cannot name, farm, study or trust.
The one omission that changes everything
Now for the detail that should stop every reader.
10 times in Genesis 1, God makes living things “after their kind.” Then He comes to human beings—and the phrase disappears.
“Then God said, ‘Let us make man in our image, after our likeness'” (Genesis 1:26). Not after his kind. In the image of God.
THE MISSING WORD
Fish: after their kind. Birds: after their kind. Livestock, creeping things, beasts: after their kind.
Humanity: in the image of God.
Man isn’t defined by his place in a biological series. He’s defined by his relationship to his Maker. Every other creature is described by looking sideways at its relatives. Only man is described by looking upward.
This is the hinge of the chapter, and it carries the weight of everything that follows in Scripture: human dignity, moral responsibility, the horror of murder (Genesis 9:6), the possibility of the incarnation, and the hope of resurrection.
Dutch theologian Herman Bavinck wrote about creation as a rich unity held together in variety—a world where difference is not a flaw to be smoothed away but a display of God’s fullness. Theologian Douglas Kelly presses the same point in his work on Genesis: the ordered distinctness of the created world is part of what makes it a revelation of its Maker rather than a puzzle to be solved. And the presuppositional tradition running from Cornelius Van Til to Jason Lisle presses the further question: if the world really were a seamless continuum with no God-given categories, on what basis would we expect our minds to carve it up correctly at all?
The categories aren’t our invention. That’s precisely why they can be trusted.
Answering the objections

Boundaries as a gift
We began with a phrase people misread and end with a phrase people underestimate.
“After their kind” isn’t a padlock. It’s a portrait. It shows us a Maker who didn’t produce one thing that slowly became everything, but many things, each one distinct, each one given room to fill the earth in its own way. The lines in creation aren’t walls built to keep life small. They’re the edges that make each thing itself.
That’s a better position than the one most people are defending—better because it is truer to the Hebrew, better because it survives the evidence, and better because it hands the argument back to the question that actually matters. Not whether living things change. They do. But whether change of that sort could ever have produced the living world from a single beginning.
Genesis says it didn’t. It says God made them, kind by kind. And then, in a chapter full of kinds, He made one creature in His own image instead—and called him son.
Tough Questions, Honest Answers
How many kinds of animals did Noah take on the ark?
Scripture gives no number, so any figure is a research estimate rather than a doctrine. Working from the family level as the usual boundary, creation biologists have suggested somewhere around 1,400 kinds, which comes to fewer than 7,000 individual animals once pairs and the extra clean animals are counted. That is a far smaller task than the millions of species people usually imagine, and it fits comfortably inside a vessel of the dimensions given in Genesis 6:15. Two further points ease the load: sea creatures were not aboard, and young animals take less space and less food than adults. The honest summary is that the number is unknown but manageable, and that the text never asked us to fit every modern species through the door.
If two animals cannot breed together, does that prove they are different kinds?
No, and this is one of the most common mistakes in the discussion. The ability to interbreed can be lost over generations through changes in chromosome structure, timing of breeding seasons, courtship behaviour or simple geography. So a failed cross tells us very little. A successful cross, on the other hand, is powerful evidence that two creatures share a created ancestry. This is why researchers treat hybridisation as a one-way test, and why they combine it with other lines of evidence rather than leaning on it alone.
Does “after their kind” forbid crossbreeding, hybrids or modern genetic engineering?
Genesis 1 is describing what God did, not issuing a command to us, so the phrase itself forbids nothing. The mixing laws of Leviticus 19:19 and Deuteronomy 22:9–11 were given to Israel as signs of her calling to be a distinct people, and the New Testament does not carry them over to the church. Breeding a mule or crossing two varieties of wheat is not a sin. That said, the wider doctrine of creation does give us a framework for thinking about modern biotechnology: the created order has real structure, human beings are stewards rather than owners, and the image of God in man sets a boundary that our tools must not be allowed to blur. The question is not whether we may work with creation, but whether a particular act honours or defaces what God has made.
Leviticus 11 lists the bat with the birds. Does that mean the Bible classifies animals wrongly?
It means the Bible classifies animals differently, which is not the same thing. Leviticus is not offering a system of biological ancestry; it is giving Israel a practical food law, sorting creatures by where they live and how they move. In that scheme, flying things belong together, and the bat flies. English does something similar when it calls a jellyfish a fish or a peanut a nut. Modern taxonomy is one useful way of grouping creatures, but it is not the only true one, and it did not exist for another three thousand years. Accusing Moses of bad biology here is like accusing a cookbook of bad chemistry.
Are mules, ligers and beefalo evidence for or against created kinds?
Strongly for. Each of these crosses shows that creatures given separate species names in modern classification are still biologically compatible, which is exactly what we would expect if they descend from a single created pair. The fact that many such hybrids are infertile is not a problem either; it fits a picture of populations that have been drifting apart since the flood, gradually losing the ability to recombine. Far from embarrassing the model, hybrids are among its clearest confirmations, and they mark out the boundaries of kinds from the inside.
Did Carl Linnaeus base his classification system on the Genesis kinds?
He was certainly working within a Christian framework and initially assumed that species were the fixed units God had made. But his own observations changed his mind. Studying an unusual variant of toadflax and the behaviour of plant hybrids, he came to think that new species could arise from a smaller number of originally created types, and in his later work he moved the created unit up to what he called the genus. His story is a useful warning to both sides: the man who gave us “species” did not think species were what God created, and no classification scheme should be treated as though it fell from heaven.
Will the created kinds be restored in the new creation?
Scripture speaks of the whole creation groaning and waiting to be set free from its bondage to decay (Romans 8:21), which implies that redemption isn’t limited to human souls. Isaiah 11 and 65 picture a renewed world still full of distinct creatures—wolf, lamb, leopard, ox—living together without predation, which suggests continuity of kinds rather than their dissolution into sameness. What happens to particular extinct kinds is not revealed, and we should not pretend otherwise. What is clear is that the goal of redemption is a restored and glorified creation, not the abolition of the variety God delighted in. The categories He drew at the beginning appear to be part of what He intends to keep.
