What Is Scientism? Why It Fails Its Own Test

Here’s a sentence that quietly destroys itself.

“Science is the only way to know what is true.”

It sounds strong. Even modern. Like something a clear-thinking person would say at the dinner table.

But ask that sentence these simple questions, and it begins to crumble. Which experiment proved it? Which telescope saw it? Which laboratory tested it? Which measurement produced it?

There’s none. There never was one. That sentence isn’t a finding of science at all. It’s a belief about science. And by its own rule, a belief that no experiment can test doesn’t count as knowledge. The sentence cuts its own throat in public, and almost nobody notices.

That belief has a name. It’s called scientism. Millions hold it without ever knowing they hold it. It quietly decides, before any conversation starts, which answers are even allowed to be heard.

This article does 3 things. It explains plainly what scientism is. It gives its supporters the strongest case they have, stated fairly. Then it shows, from 7 separate directions, why that case cannot stand.

First, a Distinction That Changes Everything

Science and scientism aren’t the same thing. Confusing the two causes most of the trouble in this whole debate, and clearing it up settles half the argument straight away.

Science is a method. It’s a careful, tested, self-correcting way of studying the physical world. Scientism is a philosophy about that method. It’s the claim that science is the only way, or by far the best way, to know anything at all.

One is a tool. The other is a tool wearing a crown.

Think of a metal detector. It’s superb at finding metal. Sweep it along a beach and it’ll find coins, keys and nails. But if it finds no wood, you haven’t proved wood doesn’t exist. You’ve only proved your machine was never built to detect wood.

Science is a magnificent detector. Scientism is the conviction that whatever the detector misses mustn’t be there.

Most people we meet hold the weak form. They may never say it out loud. It shows up in one small word. “That’s just your belief. Science deals in facts.” The word is “just”, and a whole philosophy is hiding inside it.

The Strongest Case for Scientism

Honest argument means putting the other side at its best, not at its weakest. So here’s the case for scientism.

  • It works. Aeroplanes fly. Vaccines have saved more children than any sermon ever preached against disease. You’re reading these words on a device built out of quantum physics. Results like these demand respect.
  • It admits its mistakes. No other field is so willing to say it was wrong. A theory that fails the evidence is dropped, however famous its author. That’s a rare and admirable honesty.
  • It crosses every border. A chemistry experiment gives the same result in Chennai and in Chicago, whatever the researcher believes. Religions, by contrast, disagree with each other sharply.
  • Its rivals have a poor record. Astrology, alchemy and folk remedies all made confident claims. Science tested them. Most of them failed.
  • It has pushed back fear. Illnesses once blamed on curses now have treatments. Eclipses once caused panic; now they’re printed in a calendar years ahead.

That’s a serious case: those who sneer at it haven’t understood it.

But look closely at those 5 points. Every one of them is an argument for science. Not one of them is an argument for scientism. They prove science is superb at what it does. They don’t prove science is the only thing that does anything. Between those two claims lies a very wide gap — and scientism has no way of crossing it.

Here’s why.

1. It Fails Its Own Test

Some claims destroy themselves. Apply the claim to itself, and it proves itself false. Philosophers call these self-refuting claims, and they’re not merely unproven. They’re dead on arrival.

“I cannot write one word of English.”—written in English. If you can read it, it’s false.

“No sentence is longer than four words.”—that very sentence has seven. It breaks its own rule.

“Only what science can test counts as knowledge.”—no science can test that sentence. It fails its own test.

Why this matters: a claim that breaks its own rule isn’t simply short of evidence. It’s false, and no further evidence can rescue it.

This isn’t a clever debating trick invented by believers. It’s the recorded cause of death of an entire school of thought.

In the 1920s, a group of brilliant philosophers in Vienna built a movement on exactly this foundation. A statement was meaningful, they said, only if the senses could check it or it was true by definition. Everything else—God, beauty, right and wrong—was dismissed as nonsense.

Then came the obvious question. Can that rule itself be checked by the senses? It cannot. By its own standard it was nonsense. Alfred Jules Ayer, its most famous English champion, eventually conceded the programme had failed. It didn’t die because Christians attacked it. It died because it couldn’t survive itself.

Scientism is that same rule, still walking about, long after the philosophers buried it.

The usual escape. A careful opponent will now retreat to the weak form, or say scientism isn’t a claim about knowledge at all but simply a sensible working policy. But a policy is a recommendation, and a recommendation needs reasons—and those reasons aren’t themselves the output of any experiment. The retreat concedes the very point at issue: something other than science is doing the deciding.

2. Science Stands on Things Science Cannot Prove

This is the heart of the matter, so read it slowly. Before a scientist runs the first experiment, she has already assumed a great deal—and all of it had to be in place before the laboratory could be built.

  • There’s a real world outside my mind. No experiment can prove this, because every experiment already assumes it.
  • Nature behaves consistently. The same causes will produce the same effects tomorrow as they did today, and in Nairobi as in Norway.
  • Our senses are broadly reliable. We can’t test our eyes without using our eyes.
  • The laws of logic hold everywhere. A statement and its opposite can’t both be true. No microscope has ever seen this law, yet every experiment depends on it.
  • Mathematics fits the physical universe. Numbers aren’t made of matter, yet the universe obeys them. Nobody has explained why on purely material terms.
  • Truth is real and objective. There’s a way things actually are, whether or not anyone likes it.

Not one of these was discovered by science. Every one of them is assumed before science can begin. So scientism sits on a branch and saws through it, and calls the sawing “rigour”.

The Problem Nobody Has Solved

Take just one item on that list: the belief that nature behaves consistently. Why should tomorrow resemble today?

David Hume, the Scottish philosopher, pressed this hard, and no one has answered him on his own terms since. Reply that nature has always been regular, so it will go on being regular, and you’ve assumed the very thing you were asked to prove. The argument goes in circles.

Bertrand Russell gave the memorable picture. A chicken is fed by the farmer every morning, and its evidence grows stronger daily—until the morning the farmer wrings its neck. Past regularity, by itself, guarantees nothing.

Scientism has no answer to this. It simply carries on and hopes nobody asks. But Scripture gives an answer, and it is not a shrug:

“While the earth remains, seedtime and harvest, cold and heat, summer and winter, day and night, shall not cease.” (Genesis 8:22)

The Son of God “upholds the universe by the word of his power” (Hebrews 1:3). The regularity every experiment depends on is not a happy accident of matter. It’s a Person keeping His word. The scientist who expects tomorrow to behave like today is trusting a promise, whether or not he knows whose it is.

Charles Hodge set the two disciplines side by side without embarrassment: “The Bible is to the theologian what nature is to the man of science.” Both come from God. Neither is a rival to the other.

3. Whole Areas of Truth Lie Outside Its Reach

Sir Arthur Eddington, the astronomer, told a parable about this. A fisherman drags a net through the sea, examines his catch, and announces a great discovery: that no fish in the ocean is smaller than two inches. He has forgotten the holes in his net are two inches wide. His equipment, not the ocean, set the limit.

Scientism mistakes the size of the net for the contents of the sea.

Notice what this means in practice. Science can tell us how to split an atom. It can’t tell us whether to drop the bomb. It can list every chemical in a human embryo, but not what that embryo is worth. Hume named this gap too: we cannot get from a description of what is to a command about what ought to be. Facts don’t become duties by being measured more accurately.

4. It Cannot Vouch for the Mind Doing the Science

Here’s a strange twist few people see coming.

Suppose the universe is only matter, and our brain is only the product of blind processes filtered by one thing: survival. Not truth. Survival.

Survival doesn’t require true beliefs. It requires useful behaviour. A creature that runs from tigers lives, whether it thinks “that animal will eat me” or “that animal wants a race I must win by running”. The second belief is false, and the creature lives just as long.

Alvin Plantinga has pressed the point into a formal argument. If our thinking equipment is shaped only for survival, we have no independent reason to trust it when it reasons about deep questions—including the question of whether the universe is only matter. The theory ends up telling us not to trust the brain that produced the theory.

Clive Staples Lewis made the same move earlier and more simply: a theory that explains away reason has explained away the reasoning that produced it. John Burdon Sanderson Haldane, no friend of Christianity, admitted the same worry—if his thoughts were merely the motions of atoms, he had no reason to think them true, including that one.

Now turn it round. A mind made in the image of a rational God, to know a world the same God made knowable, has every right to trust itself. The scientist who denies God is still leaning, hour by hour, on a confidence only God can justify.

5. Its Own History Tells a Different Story

Most people believe science and Christianity have been at war for centuries. That story has a birth certificate, and it’s surprisingly recent: it was manufactured by two 19th-century writers, John William Draper in 1874 and Andrew Dickson White in 1896. Both are now regarded by historians of science as unreliable. Scholars such as Peter Harrison, Ronald Numbers and David Lindberg have taken the “warfare” story apart piece by piece. It, however, survives almost everywhere except in the field that studies it.

The real history runs the other way. If modern science arose, the reasons are theological.

  • One Lawgiver, one lawful world. If a single rational God made everything, the universe is one coherent system, not a battlefield of competing gods with competing moods. It makes sense to look for universal laws.
  • A creation that did not have to be this way. God was free to make the world like this, or otherwise. So we cannot work it out by pure logic in an armchair, as the Greeks tried to do. We must go outside and look. Experiment is the child of that doctrine.
  • A world that’s good, but not divine. Matter is worth studying, and cutting it open is not sacrilege. Where nature is worshipped, nature isn’t investigated.
  • A command to study it. Human beings are set over creation to tend and explore it (Genesis 1:28). “Great are the works of the LORD, studied by all who delight in them” (Psalm 111:2) — a verse carved over the door of the Cavendish Laboratory in Cambridge, one of the most productive physics laboratories on earth.

Johannes Kepler described his work as thinking God’s thoughts after Him. Blaise Pascal, Robert Boyle, Isaac Newton, Michael Faraday, James Clerk Maxwell and Gregor Mendel were not tolerated exceptions. They were the mainstream. John Calvin had no quarrel with the sciences either: he called the universe a theatre of God’s glory, and commended astronomy as a study that unfolds the wisdom of God.

When “Settled Science” Wasn’t Settled

Scientism treats today’s consensus as an oracle. History suggests a little humility instead.

  • 1700s—Phlogiston. Chemists believed everything burnable contained a hidden fire-substance, called phlogiston, which escaped into the air as the thing burned. It explained fire so neatly that it was the settled theory for most of a century. Then Antoine Lavoisier showed burning is a reaction with oxygen, and phlogiston turned out to be nothing at all.
  • Early 1800s—Phrenology. Phrenologists insisted different parts of the brain controlled different character traits, and that the bumps and hollows of a person’s skull revealed his intelligence and morals. Respectable people paid to have their heads measured, and the readings were used to judge criminals, employees and whole races. There was never any connection between skull shape and character.
  • 1874—Haeckel’s embryos. Ernst Haeckel published drawings showing the embryos of fish, birds and humans as almost identical in their early stages, as proof that every creature replays its evolutionary ancestry while it develops. The drawings were touched up to look far more alike than real specimens do, and the theory behind them was later abandoned. The pictures went on being copied into biology textbooks for roughly a 100 years.
  • 1912—Piltdown Man. A skull dug up in England was announced as the long-sought missing link between apes and humans. And for 40 years it shaped what experts said about human origins. In 1953 chemical tests exposed it as a deliberate forgery: a human skull joined to the jaw of an orang-utan, with the teeth filed down and the bones stained to look ancient. The world’s leading specialists had examined it and been fooled.
  • 1927—Buck vs Bell. Eugenics—the plan to improve humanity by stopping “unfit” people from having children—was mainstream science, backed by major universities and scientific societies. In Buck vs Bell the Supreme Court of the United States leaned on it to approve the forced sterilisation of Carrie Buck, a young woman wrongly labelled feeble-minded. 1000s of Americans were sterilised against their will, and that ruling has never been explicitly overturned.
  • 1930s to 1960s—Lysenko. Trofim Lysenko claimed crops could be trained to pass on new characteristics to their offspring, and dismissed Gregor Mendel’s genetics as foreign nonsense. The Soviet state made his view official science, and biologists who disagreed lost their posts or their freedom. His methods were applied to Soviet farms, harvests failed, and people starved.
  • 2005—A warning from inside. John Ioannidis, a medical researcher, argued that small samples, weak effects, flexible methods of analysis and heavy pressure to publish striking results together mean that most published research findings are probably false. This was not an attack from outside science. It became one of the most cited papers in modern research.
  • 2015—The replication crisis. If a finding is real, another team repeating the same experiment should get the same result. A large project retested one hundred well-known psychology studies, and only about a third came out the same way the second time. Similar trouble has since appeared in medicine, economics and cancer biology.

Read that list carefully, because it’s easy to misuse. Every error on it was corrected by science, and that self-correction is science at its best. The list isn’t an argument against science. It’s an argument against treating today’s consensus as a voice that may never be questioned. Science is a superb servant. It makes a poor god.

6. The Deeper Problem Isn’t in the Head

Everything so far could be said by a careful atheist philosopher. Some of it has been. Now we go further, to something only Scripture will tell us. The Bible doesn’t treat unbelief as a shortage of evidence. It treats it as a response to evidence that has already arrived.

“For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who by their unrighteousness suppress the truth.” (Romans 1:18)

Suppress is a striking word. You cannot suppress what you never had. Paul adds that God’s eternal power and divine nature have been clearly perceived in the things that have been made, so that people are without excuse (Romans 1:20), and that they exchanged the glory of the immortal God for images (Romans 1:22-23). Meanwhile the evidence never stops speaking: “The heavens declare the glory of God, and the sky above proclaims his handiwork” (Psalm 19:1). The signal is not weak. The receiver has been switched off on purpose.

John Calvin gave the classic picture of the remedy. Scripture, he said, is a pair of spectacles. Creation is written in enormous letters, but fallen eyes misread it until the lenses go on. The problem was never the size of the print.

Cornelius Van Til sharpened the picture further. He imagined a small child sitting on her father’s lap, and using that very position to slap his face. She can only strike him because he is holding her up. That’s the position of scientism. It uses God’s orderly world, God’s laws of logic, God’s faithfulness in keeping nature regular, and God’s moral demand that researchers tell the truth—and it uses all of it to argue that God is unnecessary.

Herman Dooyeweerd named the underlying mistake precisely: the pretended autonomy of theoretical thought. That’s the myth a thinker can stand nowhere, believe nothing in advance, and weigh evidence from perfect neutrality. There is no such place. Everyone reasons from somewhere, and the only real question is whether our starting point can bear the weight of the thinking we do on it.

So scientism isn’t merely a logical error. It’s the oldest exchange there is: a genuine gift of God lifted out of His hand and set on His throne. And like every idol, it can’t carry what’s laid on it. Ask it for meaning, and it’s silent. Ask it what a human being’s worth, and it offers the market price of the chemicals.

7. Two Books, One Author

So what do we put in its place? Not suspicion of science. Something far better, and much older. Christians have long spoken of God giving us two books. The Belgic Confession of 1561 calls creation a most elegant book set before our eyes, in which every creature is a letter leading us to contemplate God—and then says God makes Himself known more clearly and fully by His holy Word.

THE TWO BOOKS—AND WHY THEY CAN’T FINALLY DISAGREE

The book of creation. The physical universe, studied through observation and experiment. Real knowledge, open to everyone, but it will not tell you how to be saved.

The book of Scripture. God’s written Word, which tells us what creation alone never could: who we are, what has gone wrong, and what God has done about it in Christ.

One Author. Both books come from the same God, and God does not contradict Himself. A final conflict between them is therefore impossible.

But two sets of readers. Both books must be interpreted, and interpreters make mistakes. When the two appear to clash, the honest response is to re-examine our reading of both — not to tear out a page.

This changes the whole atmosphere. The Christian has no reason to fear a laboratory, and no reason to bow to one either.

Abraham Kuyper made the point in words never bettered: there is not one square inch of human life over which Christ does not cry, “Mine!” That includes the observatory and the microscope. Science is not a neutral zone outside His rule; it is a province inside it.

Scripture says the same plainly. In Christ “all things hold together” (Colossians 1:17) — which is exactly the coherence a scientist assumes whenever he expects the universe to make sense. In Him “are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge” (Colossians 2:3). And the order is fixed: “The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom” (Proverbs 9:10).

Notice what this does to science. It doesn’t crush it. It frees it—relieved of a burden it was never designed to carry, and released to do superbly the bounded thing it was made for.

WHAT THIS ARTICLE ISN’T SAYING

Not that science is unreliable. It’s one of the most reliable tools human beings have ever built, and its findings can’t be waved away when they’re inconvenient.

Not that scientists should stop seeking natural causes. Looking for natural causes is exactly what a scientist should do. The error is sliding from “I study natural causes” to “natural causes are all there is.”

Not a God of the gaps. Finding the mechanism does not push God out. Ordinary causes are His ordinary government. Explaining rainfall by meteorology does not unseat the God who sends the rain.

Not a call to blind faith. Christianity makes claims about real events in real history, and invites investigation of them. We are not asking anyone to stop thinking.

Not a licence for contrarianism. Doubting a scientific consensus doesn’t by itself make anyone a truth-teller. Stubbornness is not discernment.

How to Answer It in a Real Conversation

Three quiet questions do most of the work.

  • “Which experiment proved that?” Ask it gently, about the claim that science is the only path to truth. There’s no answer, and the silence teaches more than any argument.
  • “Is that a scientific finding, or a belief about science?” This separates the tool from the crown, and most people have genuinely never made the distinction.
  • “What did you have to assume was true before your first experiment?” Order, logic, reliable senses, honest reporting. Let the list build itself. Then ask where all of that came from.

Ask these without scoring points. We are to give our defence “with gentleness and respect” (1 Peter 3:15), and a person argued into a corner has been persuaded of nothing except that you enjoy arguing.

Science is one of the finest gifts God has given to human beings. Use it, thank Him for it, and be glad when it advances. But don’t let anyone tell you it’s the only window in the house. The heavens really tell the glory of God. Scientism is the strange decision to study the handwriting very carefully, and then deny there’s a hand that wrote it.

Tough Questions, Honest Answers

Is methodological naturalism the same thing as scientism?

No, and this is the most important distinction in the whole debate. Methodological naturalism is simply a working rule: when I am doing science, I will look for natural causes, because that is what my tools can investigate. It is a limit on a method, not a claim about reality, and Christians in science use it every day without difficulty. Scientism takes that sensible working rule and quietly upgrades it into a statement about everything that exists—from “I only study natural causes” to “natural causes are all there is.” That’s a leap from method to metaphysics, and no experiment licenses it. A doctor who examines only your body isn’t thereby claiming you have no soul.

Is scientism a religion?

Not in the formal sense, but it functions like one more often than its followers admit. It has authorities whose pronouncements are not to be questioned, a body of orthodoxy, heretics who are publicly shamed, a creation story, and a hope of salvation through technology and progress. It answers the deepest human questions — where we came from, what is wrong, what will put it right—which is exactly the work religions do. The difference is that it denies it is doing any such thing, and that denial is what makes it hard to argue with. An open faith can be examined; a faith that calls itself pure fact cannot. This is why naming it matters.

Are most scientists atheists, and can a scientist be a Christian?

Scientists are less religious on average than the general population, and surveys have consistently found this; but the picture is far less one-sided than people imagine, with a substantial minority of working scientists holding to belief in God. The variation between disciplines and between countries is large, which already suggests that the cause is partly cultural rather than purely evidential. More to the point, the question is a headcount, and headcounts do not settle truth. Some of the greatest scientists in history were devout Christians who saw their work as an act of worship, and there are thousands of believing scientists working today. A laboratory has never yet required anyone to leave his faith at the door.

What did CS Lewis say about scientism?

Lewis drew a sharp line between science, which he respected, and what he called scientific imperialism, which he did not. In The Abolition of Man he argued that if human beings are nothing but part of nature, then the power to remake human nature is really the power of some men over other men, with nothing left to restrain it — and he warned that a tyranny run in the name of science would be the hardest of all to resist, because it would come dressed as kindness. In Miracles he pressed the argument from reason: a theory that reduces thought to mere physical events has destroyed its own credentials. He also warned against what he called chronological snobbery, the assumption that the most recent view must be the truest. His warnings have aged remarkably well.

Didn’t the Galileo affair prove that the Church opposes science?

It is the one example everyone can name, which should already make us cautious. The real history is messier and far less useful to the warfare story: Galileo was not tortured or executed, he had powerful supporters within the Church, Jesuit astronomers confirmed his observations, and the evidence for the earth’s motion was genuinely incomplete at the time. Much of the conflict was about personality, patronage, politics and the authority to interpret Scripture, rather than a straightforward clash between faith and evidence. The Church’s handling of it was still wrong, and pretending otherwise helps nobody. But one badly mishandled case in the seventeenth century cannot bear the weight of a general theory, especially when the same century produced Kepler, Boyle and Newton.

Is “trust the science” an example of scientism?

It depends entirely on what the phrase is being asked to do. Used to mean “look carefully at the evidence before forming an opinion”, it’s sound advice. Used to end a discussion—to mean “no further questions are permitted”—it has stopped describing a method and started claiming an authority that science does not possess. Two things are worth holding onto here. First, a consensus is a report on where the evidence currently stands, not a proof, and the history of science is full of consensus positions that were later revised. Second, almost every public decision involves weighing values—safety against freedom, this year’s cost against next decade’s—and science cannot weigh values, because it measures what is, not what matters. Anyone who says the science alone settled the policy has smuggled in a moral judgement and labelled it a finding.

What’s the difference between scientism, positivism and empiricism?

They are three steps down the same road, each one narrower than the last. Empiricism is the broad view that a great deal of our knowledge comes through the senses and experience—modest, ancient, and largely uncontroversial. Positivism went much further, insisting that a statement is meaningful only if it can be verified by the senses or is true by definition, which had the effect of declaring God, beauty and morality to be literally nonsense; that programme collapsed in the 20th century because the rule failed its own test. Scientism is the survivor of that shipwreck: rather than saying other claims are meaningless, it says they are simply not knowledge. The wording softened, but the self-refuting core is unchanged, and it fails for exactly the same reason its ancestor did.
